Freezing Semen

The collecting and freezing process takes over an hour, however most of that time is spent in the lab processing the semen. It is possible that we will be able to collect your dog and you will be on your way in as little as 15 minutes.  If you are making a special trip, make an appointment in the morning for a collection and then another appointment in the afternoon for a second collection. This may give you additional breeding vials during the one trip.

Many dogs will produce more than 4 vials in one collection, although it is not unusual for a dog to produce up to 10 vials from a single collection. Owners have the option of storing the additional units if they choose. The annual storage fee is the same for 1 or up to 30 vials, so the only added cost of $45.00 for each additional vial. It is helpful to consider the number of vials you wish to freeze/store before arriving for your appointment.

During the collecting and freezing process, we evaluate the semen both before the freezing process and then we thaw one pellet to evaluate the semen after the freezing process. There are instances when Dr. Green may need to discuss the results of the semen evaluations with you and other medical issues that may become apparent during the collection and freezing process.

Dogs have the most viable semen when they are 4 years and younger. Often times, this is before they have proven themselves. If you have a young dog, we encourage you to collect the semen and then make the decision later about the value. Semen can be stored annually for as little as $2.00 per vial. This amount does not include the initial costs of collecting and freezing, but once semen quality has decreased, it is difficult to re-gain.

The frozen semen is stored on the premises in liquid nitrogen storage tanks. Bitch owners who are interested in breeding need to contact the stud owner for breeding arrangements. Heartland Animal Center is not the owner of the semen and no breeding arrangements can be made without the semen owner's consent.
